The No.5 ranked University of Calgary Dinos scored 49 points in the second and third quarters, en route to a 56-3 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears, Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium, claiming their third straight Hardy Cup as Canada West football champions.
Alberta, playing in their first Hardy Cup game since 2005, will have to wait another season before they get a chance to break their now 30 year conference championship draught.
The Dinos, owners of 12 Canada West championships, will now host the CIS Mitchell Bowl next Saturday, Nov. 20, where they will face the Saint Mary’s Huskies in a national semi-final for the second consecutive season. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. MT (4:30 p.m. AT), live on TSN and Radio-Canada.
Although they moved the ball well in the first quarter, the Bears simply couldn’t keep up with the Dinos, getting points courtesy a Hugh O’Neill 65-yard punt single, and a Calgary safety to complete their only scoring of the game. Alberta hasn’t scored a touchdown at McMahon stadium since their 45-13 semi final loss in 2009, a loss that previously served as their worst playoff defeat, now eclipsed by Saturday’s result.
The Dinos put up 28 second quarter points to blow the game open after leading 3-0 through the first 15 minutes.
Big plays and Alberta penalties opened the door for Dino points, as Calgary racked up 317 first half yards to Alberta’s 66, while the Golden Bears also coughed up 45 yards in penalties, including a painful unnecessary roughness call midway through the second quarter.
Trailing 10-1, and receiving the ball on their own 37 yard line off a Calgary punt, an unnecessary roughness penalty on Alberta, after the punt return, pushed the Bears back to their own 22, and then on the ensuing play, as Julian Marchand was about to be sacked, he attempted to throw the ball away, instead finding Linden Gaydosh. The big d-lineman rumbled into the endzone, untouched, for a 17-1 lead at 7:37 mark of the second, breaking the Golden Bears and their chances of a comeback.
Calgary also got first half TDs from runningback Matt Walter, and receivers Nathan Coehoorn and Anthony Parker. Parker, Richard Synder and Anthony Woodson all added second half touchdowns for Calgary as well.
The Dinos also scored on their first two drives of the third quarter, converting an eight play, 69-yard, drive into an 18-yard Parker touchdown catch, and then forcing the Bears to turn the ball over on downs at their own 36-yard, and punching it two plays later from 32-yards out.
Dinos’ QB Erik Glavic finished the game completing 15 of 19 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns before giving way to Canada West rookie of the year Eric Dzwilewski late in the third quarter.
Marchand completed 11 of 27 passes for 113 yards with two interceptions. Back-up quarterback Cutis Dell played a few snaps in the fourth, completing one of three passes for six yards. Fifth-year runningback Matt Jarvis, in his final CIS game, racked up 76 yards on 17 carries. Jean Marc-Jones, a fifth-year linebacker, led all defensive players in tackles with 10.5 in his final CIS game.
Game notes:Calgary’s 56 points is the second most in Hardy Cup history, and the second largest margin of defeat in conference history. The UBC Thunderbirds defeated Manitoba 57-3 in 1982, while the Dinos previously scored 52 points in a 1985 victory, 52-13, over Manitoba.
