Founded in 1932 the Block A Club was an honorary society of the University Athletics Board. Male student athletes were awarded the evergreen sweaters that donned a large gold A for their leadership, sportsmanship, and outstanding contributions in intercollegiate sports.
Once awarded a Block A Sweater, athletes were then considered a part of the Block A Club. In line with its primary aim of furthering athletics at the University of Alberta, and wherever possible across the province, the Block A Club welcomed visiting university athletes and actively assisted with several sport and social events on campus.
It was not until 1989 when Block A Sweaters began to be awarded to Pandas student – athletes, this is something that needed to be rectified. Therefore in 2016, University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics started to honour Pandas Alumnae who played three or more seasons, and who never received a Block A sweater prior to 1989.
Since then we have honoured 200 Pandas Alumnae with their rightfully earned Block A Sweaters, and we will continue to do so every year until every eligible Pandas Alumnae receives their sweater.
Although the Block A Club has evolved over its 88 years, the intention and meaning of the Block A Sweater has not changed. The symbol, significance, and honor of receiving a sweater is the essence of the Block A. It transcends boarders, sport, athletic ability, and age, uniting our alumni in an everlasting bond and family.
The Block A Sweater is the ultimate symbol of Golden Bears & Pandas tradition, pride and common experience shared by those who wear it. It is earned by demonstrating a significant commitment and contribution to Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics. Those who receive a Block A Sweater, whether as student-athlete, trainer, honorary or special recipient, are individuals whose contributions have made Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics better and who consider themselves to be “Green & Gold forever”.
