Golden Bears run over by Dinos

Box Score The University of Alberta Golden Bears football team remains winless on the season as they were beaten 51-1 by the No.2 team in the nation, the University of Calgary Dinos, Friday night at Foote Field in Edmonton. With the win, the Dinos improve to 6-0 and remain alone in first place, while Alberta drops to 0-6 and in last place in Canada West. The Bears were completely outgunned on offence, churning out 195 yard versus Calgary’s 538 offensive yards. Quarterback Curtis Dell completed eight of 22 passes, while back-up Ryan Schwartz connected on five of 10 throws. Fourth-year receiver Jess Valleau, who shook off a hellacious second-quarter hit, caught six passes for 70 yards to lead the Bears in receiving yards. Sophomore running back Tyler Lewis gained 52 yards on 13 carries. Alberta’s offence was playing behind an injury-depleted, and already youthful offensive line, and the team received no further luck when a number of starters, including DB Randon Ralph, DL Steven Giang, LB Duncan Morris, Valleau and others, had to miss time while on the sidelines with various ailments. The Bears entered the game without the services of normal starters Tyler Greenslade (LB), receiver Dillon Prince as well as offensive linemen Reid Bowman and Trevor Fiell. The Dinos, led by fourth-year running back Steve Lumbala, rushed for a whopping 324 yards along the ground as well as four rushing touchdowns. Lumbala finished with 22 carries for 217 yards and two touchdowns to lead all players in offensive yards, while Mercer Timmis added 92 yards on eight carries. Quarterbacks Eric Dzwilewski and Jimmy Underdahl each ran for a major as well. The Calgary QBs combined to connect on 14 of 23 pass attempts for 226 yards and two touchdowns. The only downside to Calgary’s game was their 14 penalties for 100 yards against, which is just below their Canada West leading average of 124 penalty yards against per game. The Dinos also fumbled three times, but only lost possession once. Calgary opened the game with a bang, and never looked back, as they scored on their first offensive play when Dzwilewski found Elie Bouka on the left sideline for a 74-yard catch-and-run scoring play just two minutes and 13 seconds into the game. Alberta managed a single point in the first quarter when freshman kicker Stephen Fabian nailed a 51-yard punt into the Dino endzone. A field goal by Johnny Mark made it a 10-1 game after the first quarter, but the Dinos increased that lead to 17-1 early in the second quarter and then 24-1 advantage at half-time. Alberta’s defence did force a turnover midway through the second frame when fifth-year DB Brent Krawchuk intercepted a Dzwilewski pass, which ended the QB’s night. Underdahl, however, guided Calgary to 17 third-quarter points, and another 10 in the fourth as the Dinos rolled on to the win. The Golden Bears did come close to scoring their first major of the game late in the fourth as Schwartz marched the Bears into the red-zone, but ultimately fell short. Alberta is next in action on October 20th when they take on the 3-3 Saskatchewan Huskies at 1:00 pm at Foote Field. It will be the final home game of the 2012 season, and ‘Senior Night’ as the program pays tribute to all fifth-year players. Calgary will look for their seventh-straight win next weekend when they travel to Regina for a date against the Cougars. Share this story Top stories from UAlberta
