Bears fall to Dinos in defensive battle

Central division leading Calgary holds off late Alberta effort

EDMONTON - The Golden Bears dropped a grueling 1-0 decision to the University of Calgary Dinos on a beautiful fall day at Foote Field Saturday afternoon.

Koen Schoffner provided the decisive and only score of the game in the 44th minute for the Dinos, an outside the box effort assisted by midfield partner Eryk Kobza.

The win furthers the Dinos (4-0-3) hopes at the Central division title, tied with Mount Royal at the top with a game in hand. As for the Bears (3-1-3), they fall to third place in the division, looking to jockey into a home playoff game at the end of this month.

QUICK HITTERS

  • The Schoffner strike was his second goal of the season, adding to a team leading 0.91 goals per 90 minutes.
  • This is the second straight win at Foote Field for the Dinos, the previous meeting bewteen the two a 3-1 victory on Sept. 8, 2019.
  • This ties the smallest margin of victory between the two rivals, also a 1-0 game won by the Bears in 2018.
The first half was not without offence, with a combined 11 shots on target; 6 coming from the Golden Bears. Calgary goalkeeper Jake Ruschkowski was outstanding, parrying all 6 aside.

Schoffner pushed a shot past Liam Collens to put the Dinos up going into the half, a lead they would not relinquish.

Alberta pushed to get on the board early in the second half, but Calgary's impressive defensive form did not allow many great scoring opportunities.

Matthew Miki impressed for the Bears, leading a late Alberta charge.

The two teams return to action tomorrow at Foote Field in a pivotal matchup in the Central division playoff race. The Dinos could clinch a berth with a win, while Alberta looks to rebound from a hard-fought loss.
