Pandas fall to Cougars in shootout

Pandas split the weekend series with MRU after 3-2 shootout loss

EDMONTON - In a wild afternoon match-up, the Mount Royal Cougars came out victorious in a 3-2 shootout win over the University of Alberta Pandas on Saturday afternoon at Clare Drake Arena.

After opening their 2021-22 season campaigns Friday night, where the Pandas found the double-overtime winner, the Pandas & Cougars met again for an afternoon clash on the ice, splitting the weekend series at one game apiece.

The Cougars Kaitlyn Ross walked away with her first win of the season, making 27 saves on 29 shots. Across the ice, Halle Oswald backstopped the Pandas for a majority of the game, making 20 saves after relieving starting goalie Kristen Chamberlin who made eight saves in the first period of play.

In the back and forth match-up, Tatum Amy and Aliya Jomha each found the back of the net during regulation play, while Brenne Trotter scored to lone goal in the shootout. Alberta's Danica Namaka and Grace Tam found the net in defeat.

It didn't take long for the Cougars to get on the board as Amy found the back of the net just 34 seconds. With just over five minutes remaining in the first period, the puck found its way from behind the net to Namaka tape in the slot to even the score at one heading into the first intermission.

After a seemingly quiet second period, the Cougars jumped back on top 2-1 with a goal from Jomha after jumping on a rebound in front of the Pandas goal for an easy tap-in. However, it didn't take long for the Pandas to respond, as two minutes later Tam's shot from the top of the circle found its way through a crowd to even the score on the powerplay to end the second period.

Unable to break the tied score, the Pandas and Cougars went to overtime for the second time in 24 hours, but it was a battle of the goaltenders with neither willing to give in, sending the game to a shootout.

The shootout proved tough to score with both teams being denied through seven total shooters before Trotters snip low blocker on Oswald sealed the deal for the Cougars.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend when the Cougars welcome the Trinity Western Spartans at home on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Pandas will utilize their conference 'bye' weekend by battling the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens in a home-and-home series. The Pandas will be back in Canada West conference action on October 29 and 30th at the University of Regina.
