Battle of Alberta renewed on Sunday afternoon

1-2 Bears travel to Calgary for clash with 1-2 Dinos

EDMONTON – In one of the more surprising storylines in Canada West Football, the 1-2 Alberta Golden Bears visit the 1-2 Calgary Dinos in a battle of teams looking to end two-game losing streaks.

The Bears are coming off a disappointing 54-27 thrashing at the hands of the Saskatchewan Huskies, while Calgary failed to hold on to a 20-2 second-half lead, dropping a 28-20 decision to Manitoba last weekend.

Sunday's Week 4 clash will be streamed live on Canada West TV.

HEADLINES

  • The Calgary Dinos enter their Week 4 matchup against the Bears having won 9 of their last 10 head-to-head meetings, with the lone Alberta win coming via a 53-3 victory in the final week of the 2017 season. Excluding wins coming due to ineligible players, the Dinos have won 21 of the last 22 meetings.
  • Their first meeting of 2021 sees two of the top offences in Canada West match up. Alberta sits second in Canada West, averaging 29.3 points per game this season. Calgary owns the top offence in U SPORTS, averaging 533 yards per game. However, the Dinos have not matched their point total to their yards per game, averaging 25.0 points per contest, 5th most in Canada West.
  • While the Bears haven't had trouble scoring, including putting up 44 in their Week 1 win over UBC, their QB play has been suspect. First-year Bear Luke Hornung started last weekend in Saskatchewan, mustering just 73 passing yards on 6/19 throwing. Both 2019 CW All-Star Brad Launhardt and first-year Bear Zac Montgomery have found playing time this season, with Launhardt leading the team in passing with 442 yards through three games. Launhardt set the Bears single-season record with 2.328 passing yards in 2019.
  • The Dinos have had no issue moving the ball through the air in 2021, with their 356 passing yards per game leading the nation. The dynamic duo of Jalen and Tyson Philpot lead U SPORTS in receiving yards per game, averaging 130 and 114.3, respectively.
