Bears upset by Cascades in CW quarter-final

Bears fall 2-1 to UFV at Foote Field on Friday

EDMONTON - The ghosts of 2013 and 2015 returned for the Golden Bears on Friday, as the Fraser Valley Cascades earned an upset 2-1 win over the Alberta in their quarter-final match at Foote Field.

The win replicates their two previous playoff meetings, with the Cascades also earning quarter-final wins over Alberta in '13 and '15. It marked the first game all season the Bears have allowed more than one goal against, after allowing just four in 10 regular season matches.

The visitors erased an early 1-0 deficit, getting goals from Taylor Richardson and David Parfett, with keeper Jackson Cowx making five saves in the win. Cowx, who was also named the game MVP for UFV, made a pair of sensational saves in the second half, including a save on an Alberta penalty in the 90th.

All-time Canada West goal leader Ajeej Sarkaria scored the Bears tally in the 13th minute, with his other top-notch scoring chance turned aside by a diving Cowx in the 58th minute.

With their win, the Cascades will now advance to the Canada West Final Four, and play the winner of the Mount Royal Cougars vs Thompson Rivers WolfPack quarter-final next weekend.

The Bears, who earned four of a possible six points in the final weekend to earn the home playoff game, opened with a flurry on Friday. Sarkaria notched his eighth total goal on the campaign in the 13th, finishing the scoring chance off a feed into the box from Luke Withers.

Cowx turned aside the other two Alberta shots he faced in the opening half.

The Cascades were able to grab late momentum in the first 45 after Richardson's equalizer in the 33rd. His free kick attempt re-directed off the Alberta wall, sailing past a helpless Liam Collens.

The Cascades continued their dominance in the second, with Parfett giving the visitors the go-ahead marker in the 63rd. Set up off nice run from Charandeep Rangi, Parfett ripped in his shot from eight yards out.

Cowx turned aside all three shots on target he faced in the second, as Alberta pressed for the equalizer. Their best chance came at the end of added time, when Lahai Mansaray was taken down in the box, awarding the Bears a penalty. However, Carlos Patino's shot was turned aside in brilliant fashion by Cowx, securing the 2-1 victory.
