Cougars hang on for 3-2 win over Pandas

Pandas comeback bid falls short

EDMONTON – First-year Mount Royal forward Sydney Danielewicz scored twice, leading the visiting Cougars to a 3-2 win over the Alberta Pandas, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.

Danielewicz opened the scoring for the Cougars in the 14th minute, before adding the insurance marker for MRU in the 63rd.

Cougars keeper Katrina Greenley also made six saves to earn her third win of the season. The win pushes the Cougars to 3-4-1 on the season, while the Pandas fall to 3-5-0.

Nicole McKay and Emily Duxbury scored the Pandas goals, with Keilyn Stabler also scoring for the Cougars.

McKay's goal was her first of the season, with Duxbury scoring her third goal of the season, with all three goals coming this weekend against the Cougars.

QUICK HITTERS
  • The win is just the second ever for Mount Royal over Alberta in conference play, and their first since October 22, 2016. It's the first ever win for MRU at Foote Field.
  • The Pandas still claim the season series vs MRU, after wins of 2-0 and 4-0 earlier this season.
  • Alberta now owns a 12-2-2 all-time conference record against the Cougars.
The Cougars were able to take advantage of the wind in the first half, as Stabler scored off a free kick in the 44th minute, sneaking a shot over the outstretched arms of Pandas keeper Ashley Turner.

Greenley turned aside three Pandas shots in the first 45, as MRU took a 2-0 lead into the break.

McKay cut the visitors lead in half in the 52nd, as her rocket from distance squeaked under the cross-bar, beating a diving Greenley.

Danielewicz restored the Cougars two-goal cushion just 11 minutes later, taking advantage of a misplay from Turner in the Pandas crease, scoring into the empty Alberta net.

Duxbury's marker came too late, as she scored in the final seconds of added time.

The Cougars will host the MacEwan Griffins next weekend, while the Pandas will visit the Lethbridge Pronghorns, with all games streamed live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
