EDMONTON -
Emma Kary dropped a career-high 29 points and the Pandas scored 24 points off of Mount Royal turnovers as the Pandas dispatched the Cougars 69-55 at the Saville Community Sports Centre on Saturday evening.
Alberta moves to 4-0 on the season, and remains at the top of the Central division. Mount Royal, with two losses on the weekend slides to 2-2 and a third place sport in the Central.
Kary's 29 was the most the fourth-year guard has ever scored in Canada West competition, and a game-high. She was supported with 13 points from senior
Brianna Fehr.
On the other side of the court, the Cougars were led by Megan Wellinghurst who dropped 20 points, and Tanis Metcalfe who scored 11 with two blocks and two steals.
The win continues an 11 game winning streak for the Pandas against the Cougars, dating back to December 1st, 2012.
The game started with an electric Cougars 10-0 run, capped off with a three from Metcalfe, who had five points in the quarter. MRU was also led by Wellinghurst who netted a quarter-high nine points. The Pandas shot 16.7% from the field, with an aggressive Cougars zone defence and cold shooting stifling Alberta's offence.
The Cougs' entered the second quarter up 19-7. The Pandas regained their composure after the break, quickly asserting themselves back into the game with a full court press that helped generate 12 turnovers in the second quarter. Alberta was guided back into the game thanks to the hot hand of
Emma Kary, who netted 13 points in the quarter including three three-pointers. The score into the intermission was 31-28 for the Pandas, and it likely could have been even higher with better free throw shooting, with Alberta going 5/10 from the line.
If the Pandas press was impressive in the second, it was near unbeatable in the third. Seven turnovers, including on three straight inbounds passes, sunk the Cougars to a 17-12 deficit in the quarter. Alberta was helped by three three-pointers made, including one by first-year guard
Morgan Harris, who finished with 11.
The Cougs' finally found their first quarter footing in the last frame, putting up 15 and limiting their turnovers. They unfortunately just ran into a career night from Kary, who put up seven to ice the game for the Pandas.
The Pandas next game is in Calgary, where they face the Dinos (3-1) on November 26th. The Cougars return home to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-4), also on the 26th.
