HEADLINES
- By virtue of their 23-22 comeback win over Regina last week, the Golden Bears clinched a playoff berth for the third time in the last four seasons. A win on Saturday would also mark the Bears first winning season since a 7-1 CW record in 2005.Â
- A win by the Bears on Saturday, coupled with a Bisons loss against Regina, would give the Bears the #2 seed, and a home playoff game. 2005 was also the last time the Bears hosted a playoff game.Â
- UBC must win on Saturday, and get a Saskatchewan win over Calgary to clinch a spot in the postseason. If Regina also beats Manitoba, the Thunderbirds would finish second with a 3-3 record, and host a Hardy Cup semifinal game.Â
- Alberta has beat UBC in three of their previous four meetings, including a 40-20 win in Vancouver in 2019.Â
- The Golden Bears have been led this season by Canada West Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner Josiah Schakel. The fourth-year linebacker leads Canada West with 45.5 tackles and 4.0 sacks this season, with his 9.1 tackles per game leading the nation. He recorded nine solo tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble against Regina on Saturday.Â
- Schakel and the Bears will have their hands full with the UBC rushing attack, which ranks second in U SPORTS averaging 204 yards per game on the ground. Isaiah Knight leads the conference with 480 yards, with Dane Kapler adding in 384 yards. UBC's 33:18 average time of possession per game is also the second highest total in U SPORTS.
- Alberta won the special teams battle in their Week 1 win over UBC, averaging nearly 20 yards more per punt, taking advantage of a short field multiple times. UBC also recorded 22 penalties and five fumbles in their 44-19 loss to the Bears, with rookie QB Garrett Rooker tossing one interception.Â
