EDMONTON - Needing a single point to clinch the second seed and a home playoff date, the Pandas soccer team fell short in a 2-1 home loss to the Regina Cougars, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.Â
The loss drops Alberta (8-5-1) to third in the Prairie Division, with the Mount Royal Cougars (8-5-1) leapfrogging them into second. The Cougars earned the tie-breaker over the Pandas thanks to a pair of 3-1 wins this season. The Pandas will now travel to Langley and take on the 9-2-3 Trinity Western Spartans on October 29th in a CW quarter-final match.Â
The win for Regina is their second, as they conclude conference play with a 2-7-5 record.Â
Abby Patterson and Nicole Klassen scored for the Cougars in the upset win, with
Erin Hope scoring the lone Pandas marker in the 84th. Alberta generally dominated on Sunday, outshooting Regina 25-8, but were unable to finish on their multitude of scoring chances. The goalie combination of Cassandra De Amaral and Allyson Ford made 10 total saves, 8 of which from Ford who came in for the second half.Â
Team scoring leader
Adrienne Poulin had the first great chance for Alberta, but her shot from 15 yards out hit the right post.Â
Regina countered 10 minutes later, as a Delaney Rhinehart's pass made it's way past Alberta defender
Kelli Haffie, before Patterson deposited it past
Autumn Wynn into the Pandas net. Both shots on target from Alberta were handled easily by De Amaral, as Regina held a 1-0 lead through 45.Â
Second half substitue
Emily Duxbury had the next best Pandas chance, but her shot from in tight also hit the post, and redirected harmlessly into the corner. Ford was also excellent in rebound control, refusing to give Alberta second looks.Â
Klassen doubled the Regina lead in the 76th, finishing a through-ball from Jessica Chow.Â
Pushing late, Hope finally got the Pandas on the board in the 84th, as a
Brooke Lang shot redirected in off Hope in the Cougars crease. That was as close as the Pandas would come, however, finishing their regular season with a 2-1 loss.Â
