EDMONTON -Â The University of Alberta Pandas used a standout multi-point showing from fourth-year forward
Cassidy Maplethorpe, combined with
Halle Oswald's 23-save shutout, to defeat the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Clare Drake Arena.
Taylor Anker,
Natalie Kieser, and
Jadynn Morden scored the goals for Alberta (5-3-0), who picked up the sweep over the Huskies (3-3-2).Â
Â
Saskatchewan carried the pace of play in a scoreless first period, with their best chance coming from the stick of second-year forward Taylor Wilkinson, who rang a close-range snapshot off of the post five minutes into the game. Oswald stood tall in the Panda crease, turning away nine shots and helping Alberta kill off all three Huskie powerplays.
Â
The second period saw the home team come out of the gate with a vengeance, with Huskies netminder Camryn Drever turning aside
Madison Willan and Maplethorpe in quick succession to open the frame. After a Saskatchewan penalty came as a product of the early Panda pressure, Anker converted a fantastic feed from Maplethorpe at the side of the net to break the deadlock only 39 seconds into the period. The Pandas increased their lead at 14:51 of the second, with Kieser sneaking a loose puck past Drever after a point shot from Kezama for her third goal of the season.
Â
The home team held steady defensively through the final frame, with the Huskies most dangerous chances coming during 4-on-4 play. Oswald turned aside Isabella Pozzi and Sara Kendall within a short span to keep the visitors off the board midway through the period, after a series of back-and-forth rushes with both teams down a player. Alberta struck with another power play tally at 15:27 of the third, as Morden redirected home a point shot to put the game out of reach.
Â
The Pandas will play host to the University of Regina in a two-game set next weekend at Clare Drake Arena, while the Huskies return to action on November 4
th and 5
th with a home-and-home series against their provincial rival Cougars.
