EDMONTON - The Pandas scored three times in the third period to help cement a 4-1 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans at Clare Drake Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Rookie Megan Wilson opened the scoring in the first, while fellow rookie Hayleigh Craig, fourth-year Kiara Machry, and leading Alberta scorer Madison Willan added the third period tallies to lift the Pandas to a 9-5-2 record, still sitting in 5th place in the Canada West standings.
With the win, the Pandas have clinched a playoff berth, as the most points the seventh place Regina Cougars can get is 20, which the Pandas have, and Alberta holds the tiebreaker in both head-to-head and goal differential.
Fifth-year Kirsten Chamberlain stopped 12 of 13 Spartans shots, while Trinity Western's Jadeyn Kastning set aside 27 of 30 Alberta shots.
Brooke Legault was the scorer for the Spartans late in the third, her first career goal.
It was an eventful first period, one that included quite a few extracurriculars and skirmishes. The frame was dominated by the Pandas, ending with a shot differential of 10 to 3. To open the scoring, Megan Wilson picked a defenders pocket at the blue line and fought another one off to score an impressive individual effort.
The penalty troubles continued from last night for the Spartans, as they committed four infractions in the period alone. Alberta was unable to capitalize on their powerplay opportunities however.
The second period was a fast-paced sequel to the first. Very few stoppages led to some quality chances from both teams, who each had a powerplay in the period, but both netminders held strong. Spartan's goalie Jadeyn Kastning had a good period, putting aside all eight Alberta shots.
The game remained 1-0 heading into the third period.
Two minutes into the third frame the Pandas struck again, this time a heave from Craig that found its way through Kastning's five-hole. It was her first career Canada West goal.Â
A fellow rookie in Legault added her first career goal late in the third, on an impressive team play including McKenzie Mayo and Kailey Ledoux.
Willan added her goal with more than a minute left, an impressive effort buoyed by a phenomenal pass from teammate Peyton Laumbach.
Alberta was able to shut it down the rest of the way for a second-straight victory and sweep of the newly-formed Spartans. For Trinity Western, this is their 10th straight loss, being outscored 41-10 over that span.
The Pandas return to action on Friday with a home-and-home set against the MacEwan Griffins, while the Spartans return home for a two game set against the second place UBC Thunderbirds.Â
