Bears sweep Dinos to punch ticket to CW Final

Alberta sweeps Dinos with 6-1 win in Game 2

EDMONTON – Opening the scoring 10 minutes in, and never looking back, the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Alberta Golden Bears clinched their spot in both the 2022 Canada West Final and University Cup Championships with a 6-1 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night.

The win gives the Bears a sweep over the Dinos in their semifinal series, following their 6-2 win in Game 1 on Friday. The sweep is also the 17th-straight for Alberta over Calgary, as they extend their win-streak over their rivals to 34-straight playoff games.

Noah Philp was sensational again, adding three more points, including a pair of goals, finishing the semifinal series with eight points in two games. Matt Fonteyne, Josh Paterson, Josh Prokop, and Luc Smith, also scored for Alberta, who secured a spot in the conference final for the 8th time in the past nine seasons.

Taz Burman turned aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced, earning his first career CW post season win.

Carl Stankowski, who came in relief for Brodan Salmond in Game 1, stopped 24 of the 30 shots he faced as the Dinos starter in Game 2.

Tim Vanstone scored the lone Dinos goal midway through the third.

Fonteyne and Paterson opened the scoring for Alberta in the first, with Fontenye's marker 10 minutes in coming on the powerplay.

Philp added to the Bears lead midway through the third, as his shot from the halfway re-directed in off a Dino defender, and past Stankowski.
Prokop's first of the series was an absolute beauty, beating Stankowski over the shoulder, destroying the Dinos goalie's water bottle. Philp added a second goal in the frame, a blast from the point, before the second period was over.

Smith and Vanstone exchanged goals in the third.

Alberta will host either the UBC Thunderbirds or Mount Royal Cougars in the 2022 Canada West Final, March 18-20 at Clare Drake Arena.
