EDMONTON - Former Brock Badger
Cassidy Maplethorpe scored her first goal as a Panda in double overtime, giving Alberta a 3-2 win over Mount Royal on Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.Â
Maplethorpe, who finished the game with four shots, clinched the win on a breakaway in double OT, sneaking a backhand past Cougars starter Kaitlyn Ross.Â
Â
Abby Soyko and
Madison Willan also scored for Alberta, with
Halle Oswald stopping 22 of the 24 shots she faced. Mount Royal forced OT with the game-tying goal coming with just nine seconds left in the third, as Ava Metzger's shot re-directed in off a Pandas skate. Tatum Amy scored the other Cougars goal in the first, with Ross stopping 31 shots in a strong performance to open the season.Â
Â
Amy's marker opened the scoring just seven minutes into the first, as her point shot on the Cougars powerplay found its way through a screened Oswald.Â
Soyko tied the game just over two minutes later, beating Ross following an incredible solo effort in the offensive zone.Â
Both Pandas goals in regulation were highlight reel material, as Willan's tally in the third coming off a gorgeous pass from
Payton Laumbach. Alberta held the lead for 17 minutes following Willan's goal two minutes into the third, before the unfortunate bounce to send the game to OT with nine seconds left in regulation.Â
Alberta and Mount Royal will close out their series tomorrow night at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary.Â
