EDMONTON -Â Another home game, and another you can classify as the biggest for the Bears in two decades. Previously, clinching the playoffs and a home playoff game were at stake. On Saturday, the 6-1 Bears host the 5-2 UBC Thunderbirds with the No. 1 seed in Canada West up for grabs.Â
The math is simple. Whoever wins on Saturday will be the No. 1 seed in Canada West, and hold home field advantage throughout the Hardy Cup playoffs. The loser will slide to the No. 2 seed, and also host one of two Hardy Cup semifinals next weekend.Â
The Golden Bears only loss this season came at the hands of the Thunderbirds, with UBC's offence rolling in a 54-37 home win five weeks ago. The Bears responded with three straight wins to reclaim the top spot in CW, including a 35-25 road win over Manitoba last Friday.
UBC set up the battle for first place with a 31-20 home win over Regina on Saturday.Â

KEY STATS
- Golden Bears have won three-straight home games over UBC, including a 15-12 win in Week 9 last fall. The Thunderbirds last road win in Edmonton came on September 23, 2017.Â
- With a win on Saturday, the Bears can secure two firsts; their first undefeated season at home since 2005, and can clinch the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2004.Â
- Recording 15 of the Bears 35 points in their Week 7 win over Manitoba, Jonathan Giustini became the Bears all-time scoring leader. The fourth-year kicker/safety was also named the Canada West and U SPORTS Special Teams Player of the Week.Â
- Giustini can further add his name to the record books on Saturday, as he needs one field goal and five converts to break those respective all-time Bears program records. 14 points would also give Giustini the Bears single-season scoring title, breaking Brian Fryer's 49-year old record.Â
- Alberta QB Eli Hetlinger needs 146 passing yards to become the fifth Bears pivot to toss for 2,000 yards in a single season. Brad Launhardt holds the single-season record with 2,328 yards (2019).Â
