EDMONTON - Emily Bergesen scored 4:16 into overtime, giving the visiting Mount Royal Cougars a 3-2 win over the Alberta Pandas.Â
The Pandas finished with a 29-26 shot advantage, but went 1/8 on the powerplay in the loss. It is the second loss in three games for the Pandas (8-2-1).Â
The win for MRU sees their record improve to 8-3-0, their second win in a row. Allee Gerrard and Alex Spence scored the other two tallies for MRU, with Kaitlyn Ross making 27 saves in a terrific performance in the MRU net. Four of those saves came in overtime for Ross, including a pair of abbreviated breakaways.Â
It is the first win for MRU over Alberta this season, after the Pandas swept their first weekend series in early October.Â
Payton Laumbach and Cassidy Maplethorpe scored for Alberta, who never led at any point on Friday night. Halle Oswald made 23 saves, suffering just her second loss of the season.Â
Gerrard and Maplethorpe exchanged goals in the opening period for both sides, with Gerrard's seventh of the season giving MRU a temporary lead.Â
Spence restored the Cougars lead midway through the second, beating Oswald for her first of the season.Â
Laumbach responded with her second of the season midway through the third, with Oswald making four saves in the frame to force overtime.Â
Oswald would not be able to stop Bergesen late in OT however, with the veteran Cougar beating the Pandas goalie farside for the game-winner.Â
Mount Royal will host the rematch on Saturday night at Flames Community Arena at 7:00 p.m.Â
