Game Recap: Pandas Hockey | | Connor McCallister

Pandas dominate Griffins 5-0 to extend shutout streak to six games

Pandas tie CW record for consecutive shutouts

EDMONTON - Jadynn Morden potted two goals, and rookie Grace Glover stopped all 13 shots she faced for the U SPORTS 5th-ranked Alberta Pandas in a 5-0 shutout victory over the MacEwan Griffins Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Glover adds to the incredible shutout streak that the Pandas have active that now numbers six straight games without giving up a goal. The team and Canada West record is set at six games, done twice before in the 2000/01 and 2017/18 campaigns. The streak has seen contributions from fellow goaltenders Halle Oswald and Misty Rey during their current shut-out streak. Glover has amazingly not allowed a goal yet through her first 179:30 minutes of action, and has turned aside all 47 shots that she has faced. She is now 3-0-0 to start her Pandas career, with all three wins being shutout victories.

Payton Laumbach, Taylor Anker each had a goal and three assists apiece for a game-high four points, while Morden added an assist in the winning effort. Griffins goaltender Brianna Sank was busy in the contest, turning away 27 of the 32 shots she faced.

With the victory the Pandas move to 14-2-2 on the year, heading into the break sitting in second place in the CW. The Griffins drop to 3-15-0 and sit in last place in the conference.

The Griffins started the opening period well, outshooting the Pandas 6-1 through five minutes and testing the rookie Glover early. It would be the Pandas, however, who got on the board first thanks to a powerplay goal from Peyton Laumbach midway through the period. It was her third of the year, setup by Morden and Hayleigh Craig on an extended possession in the Griffins zone. The teams would trade penalty kills after that to head into the intermission with a 1-0 Alberta advantage.

Natalie Kieser added her seventh goal of the season in the second off a rebound to put the Pandas up two early in the second. Taylor Anker scored her second on the year shortly after, an impressive deflection from the point that was enough to beat the Griffins Brianna Sank. The Pandas outshot the Griffins 10-4 in the frame.

The final frame saw two late goals from the home side to put the contest out of reach. Morden potted a 5-on-3 PP goal with two minutes remaining, then added another one on the one-man advantage a minute later for a lightning quick brace. She now has 12 goals on the year, which moves her into the league lead ahead of UBC's Mackenzie Kordic who has 11.

This contest was the final game of the 2023 calendar year for both teams, as they head into the winter break. The Pandas open the second half on the road in Langley to face Trinity Western, while MacEwan hosts a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos.
