EDMONTON – Third-year MRU forward Sydney Danielewicz potted a goal and added an assist to lead the Mount Royal Cougars to their first victory of the season, a 2-1 road victory over the Alberta Pandas Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
Danielewicz was aided by a goal from first-year Tamara Djurisic, while the Pandas saw a direct corner goal from the boot of
Erin Hope.
It was early fireworks for the visiting team, as a counter opportunity in the fifth minute saw third-year Danielewicz play a ball to Djurisic in the middle who made no mistake and put her second of the year past a diving Wynn for a 1-0 MRU advantage.
The home side would answer back later in the half after some scoreless jockeying. The third-year midfielder Hope sent a low, curling corner right at MRU's keeper Torrance Langdon whose attempt to save it deflected the ball into the back of the net and the game was knotted at 1.
The game would stay 1-1 until the 57
th minute, when the Cougars fourth-year Keilyn Stabler sent a beautiful ball onto the edge of the box where Danielewicz put a good boot behind it and beat
Autumn Wynn for her second of the year to put the visitors up 2-1, their second lead of the game.
The keepers were both impressive for the rest of the second-half, parrying all other attempts on goal. Langdon made six saves on the day, while Wynn stopped four shots on target.
While two stoppage time Hope corners generated dangerous chances for the Pandas, the Cougars would hold on for a 2-1 victory in this contest.
The Pandas travel to British Columbia for a two game set with the UNBC Timberwolves and the UBC Thunderbirds. The Cougars return home for a weekend against the Manitoba Bisons, and the Winnipeg Wesmen.
