Laumbach, Tews play the hero in dramatic Pandas win

Pandas salvage series split with 2-1 OT win

EDMONTON - One day after having their hearts broken in the dying seconds, the Pandas flipped the script on Saturday. Payton Laumbach scored the game-tying goal off a scramble in the UBC crease with 0.1 seconds left in regulation, before Brooklyn Tews scored the winner just 54 seconds into overtime.

Ella Stewner's initial shot from the point was stopped by UBC goalie Elise Hugens in the final moments of regulation, but Laumbach was able to tie the game off the rebound in the T-Birds crease. Tews capped off a dramatic win by tapping in a rebound off a Pandas two-on-one in overtime.

The dramatic win salvages a series split for the Pandas (1-1-0) against the top-seeded Thunderbirds (1-0-1). The win also snaps a seven-game UBC win streak over Alberta, with the Pandas last win coming on February 22nd, 2020.

Mackenzie Kordic gave the Thunderbirds their initial lead with her first of the season with seven minutes left in the third. UBC scored a late goal in Friday night's 3-2 win. Elise Hugens made 21 saves for UBC, with Halle Oswald stopping 18 of the 19 UBC shots she faced to pick up her first win of the season.

The Pandas will take on the MRU Cougars next weekend in a home-and-home series, while UBC will return home for a weekend set against the Regina Cougars.
