EDMONTON - Claire Signatovich had a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday's 71-46 victory over the crosstown MacEwan Griffins at the Saville Centre.
Alberta sweeps the season series with the win and moves to 7-3 in conference play. The U SPORTS third-ranked squad was stifling on defence, forcing 39 turnovers and held the Griffins to shoot just 42 total field goals in the contest.
MacEwan drops to 0-10 with the loss, but saw a phenomenal performance from Noelle Kilbreath who led all scorers with 19 points in the contest.
The first half was punctuated by a strong Pandas second quarter in which they outscored the visitors 27-9, and largely dominated on both ends. They shot 60% from the field (9/15) while holding the MacEwan offence to just a 44% mark with 10 turnovers. Signatovich led all scorers at the break with 13, while Kilbreath trailed close behind with a Griffin-high 12 points.
MacEwan came out of the break re-energized, outscoring the hosts 17-9 in the third quarter. However, the clamps from the hosts would strengthen in a fourth quarter in which they held MacEwan to just eight points and held on for the 71-46 victory.
The Griffins host Brandon next weekend, with both teams looking for their first win. Alberta travels to Winnipeg to take on the Wesmen in a two-game set.
