EDMONTON - Fourth-years Emily Duxbury and Adrienne Poulin had two goals apiece as the Alberta Pandas got back on track with a 4-0 dominant victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
It was an impressive win for the home team, who completely controlled possession and chances for a large portion of the game. Poulin and Duxbury's goals leave them both at five goals in this Canada West campaign. Wanda Czebresiuk had an assist to push her season total to six, which is now tied for the league lead. Tara Simonot and Elise Halabi also recorded helpers on what was one of the last beautiful weekends for outdoor soccer in Edmonton.
The win pushes Alberta to 6-3-1, and they remain in third place with a point advantage over the fourth place Saskatchewan Huskies. They are currently in line to face the second-place MacEwan Griffins in the first round of the CW Playoffs. The Wesmen move to 1-9-0 on the season, maintaining a tie with UNBC for the last position in the Canada West.
It was all Pandas from the opening salvo, as in just the fifth minute Duxbury was able to fire a laser at net that beat Forbes for an early 1-0 lead. Next, it was Poulins turn when she made a run past the Winnipeg backline and tucked the ball inside the post for a two-goal advantage in the 12th minute. Duxbury would add her second of the game from the penalty spot after a handball call in the 17th, while Poulin would also add her second 10 minutes later with a phenomenal turn-and-shoot off a pass from Canada West debutante Halabi who recorded her first point. When the dust settled at half, the Pandas held a 4-0 lead, with a 18 to 1 advantage in the shot table (12 to 0 on target). Forbes was under siege the entire half, but had an admirable performance with seven saves and preventing what could have been a larger deficit.
After a flurry of substitutions at the break, the Wesmen tightened up at the back and were able to slow the games previous torrid pace down to a more manageable crawl. They managed to keep the Pandas scoreless, while also managing a couple of shots and one on target. The teams would trade chances, but ultimately wind the clock down to finish with a 4-0 Alberta win.
Alberta splits a home-and-home with rival MacEwan next weekend, while Winnipeg returns home for a split series versus Manitoba.
