LETHBRIDGE - In a hard-fought battle under the hot sun at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium, the Pronghorns faced off against the Alberta Golden Bears in their final game of the home-opener weekend. Despite relentless effort and several close chances, the Pronghorns were unable to break through Alberta's defense, ultimately falling short 1-0.
Fifth-year keeper
Liam Collens stops all nine Pronghorns shots he faces, earning his 13th career clean sheet. With two shutouts this weekend, Collens moves into second place in Bears history for career clean sheets.
David Chung scored the game-winner for Alberta in the first half.Â
Just over ten minutes in Chung struck first, using fancy footwork to fake a pass before drilling the ball into the net.
The Pronghorns quickly countered, putting the Golden Bears on their heels with a series of deep attacks but couldn't find the back of the net, despite a key chance at the 20-minute mark by Tom Denness.
Both teams played a tight first half, protecting the ball well and minimizing turnovers.
Ten minutes into the second half, Pronghorns goalkeeper Armaan Thawer came up clutch with two critical saves, denying a header from
Frankroy Cain and another shot from Chung to keep the game within reach.
Alberta kept the pressure on, but an offside call nullified another scoring opportunity.
A 77th-minute yellow card on Alberta gave the Pronghorns a free kick in a dangerous spot, but couldn't capitalize on the equalizer.
First-year standout Noah Bilodeau had the crowd on its feet after finding the net, but a foul just before wiped the goal off the board, leaving the Pronghorns still chasing with ten minutes to play.
In the dying minutes, the Pronghorns poured on the pressure, with Cole Rosenlund weaving through the defense for a goal-line shot, but Golden Bear's keeper
Liam Collens stood tall, making a crucial save.
The 2-0-0 Golden Bears will host the Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars next Saturday and Sunday at Foote Field.Â
