Fireworks expected as Bears visit Bisons on Saturday

Bears visit nationally ranked team for second time in three weeks

EDMONTON – For the second time in three weeks, the Golden Bears will head on the road to take on a ranked opponent. Week 1 saw the Bears earn a 42-28 win over the UBC Thunderbirds, while Week 3 sees Alberta head east to visit the #6 ranked Manitoba Bisons.

Sandwiched between the two massive road contests was a 36-22 home loss to Calgary last Friday, marking the Bears 11th straight loss to the Dinos in Edmonton. Alberta turned the ball over eight times in the loss to Calgary, including four interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns.

The Bears will look to rebound against a Bison team they have had recent success against; Alberta has won two-straight over the Bisons, and three of the last four. Alberta opened with a 37-16 home win over Manitoba last September, before earning a 35-25 road win at IG Field.

Both teams enter Week 3 with a plethora of weapons on offence; Alberta fields reigning CW MVP Matthew Peterson, third-year QB Eli Hetlinger, and explosive receivers Kolby Hurford and Chevy Thomas. Peterson rushed for 117 yards on 19 carries in the Bears win over UBC, with both Thomas (214) and Hurford (107) ranking in the top 10 in Canada West for receiving yards.

The Bears 32.0 points and 26.5 first downs per game leads Canada West.

Manitoba counters with three offensive stars of their own; Dual-threat QB Jackson Tachinski, Canada West's leading rusher Breydon Stubbs, and receiver Vaughn Lloyd. The Bisons lead the conference in scoring (35.0 PPG), and sit second in yards (442.5) and first downs (24.0).
