Game Recap: Golden Bears Soccer | | Connor Hood

Bears comeback bid falls inches short in 1-1 draw with Lethbridge

Offside call in extra time nullifies game-winner

EDMONTON - For the third-straight game, the Golden Bears scored late in the second half to break a deadlock. Unlike the previous two however, Saturday's goal from Jake Bosch was deemed just offside, resulting in a 1-1 draw between Alberta and Lethbridge.

Just as they had in their previous two games at Foote Field last week, Alberta fell behind by a goal to their visitor, before clawing it back to level. And for the second time in those three matches, it was first-year Bear Caden Ruby finding the equalizer. With the draw, Alberta earns four of six points in their two meetings against Lethbridge, as their record moves to 6-1-2. The draw for the Pronghorns is their third-straight, and sixth in 2024, with their record moving to 2-2-6.

In what was a hotly contested match between the rivals, the two sides combined for 11 shots, 26 fouls, and six yellow cards. Kai Sakaguchi opened the scoring for Lethbridge in the 35th, as a Liam Collens clearing attempt from his own crease hit Sakaguchi's shin pads, and back into the Alberta net.

Alberta outshot Lethbridge 4-3 in the first, but were unable to generate any high-quality scoring looks.

As they did last weekend, the Bears substituted in Ruby and Frankroy Cain, and immediately found an offensive spark. Ruby redirected in a pass from Prince Amanda, beating a helpless Tegan Romaine in the Horns net.

The Bears continued to apply pressure, leading to a handful of set pieces in tight. It was one of those set pieces in extra time that led to the dramatic and controversial ending. Habib Assem's shot from 23 yards out was headed in by Bosch, who was narrowly offside in the Horns box.

Following the draw, Alberta will set their sights on the 3-7-0 Saskatchewan Huskies in a home match tomorrow, while Lethbridge will head across the river and battle the 2-6-1 MacEwan Griffins.
