EDMONTON - It was a standout night for Pandas fourth-year
Jayden Tanner, who scored a career-high 17 points to help Alberta in a 85-57 victory over the UBCO Heat Saturday evening at the Saville Centre.
She was certainly not devoid of help in this one, as the Pandas shot 54.7% from the field and boasted three double-digit scorers en route to their eighth straight win.
Reece Hall chipped in with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 boards in a day where they could not be stopped inside the paint, outscoring the Heat 62-20 from there. They sit at 10-2 and are tied atop the Canada West Prairie Division standings.
The Heat were unable to crack a stout Pandas defence, shooting 34% on the day, but still had a standout performance from Lauren Foullong who potted 15 points on five triples. They move to 3-9 in the campaign and drop further down in the Pacific.
Alberta started the game off with a strong offensive first quarter, shooting 47.1% from the field and was a true depth effort in which eight separate Pandas found the scoresheet. They were able to do this despite a strong full court press deployed by the Heat in what was a physical half. UBCO would see a quarter-high six points from Lauren Foullong who hit two big threes early, but they entered the second-quarter down 20-14.
The Pandas were incendiary in the second frame, outscoring the Heat 30-14 and controlling play for long stretches of time. The three-headed hydra of
Jayden Tanner,
Annacy Palmer, and Claire Signatovitch combined for 22 points in the quarter as Alberta cruised into the break up 50-28.
The Pandas shot an astounding 60.6% from the field at the half, with Tanner leading all scorers with 11 points.
Reece Hall almost had a double-double through two quarters with eight points and 10 rebounds for Alberta, while the Heat were paced by Kelsey Falk who had 10 points.
The third quarter saw a better offensive effort from the Heat, of whom Foullong continued her good day with six points, but the Pandas shot 50% and continued to find and exploit holes in the UBCO defence.Â
The Heat came out for the fourth, outscoring the Pandas 15-14, but it was a bit too late as the Pandas took this one 85-57. Tsuki Tsuzuki scored seven points for the Heat as the frames leading scorer, while the Pandas depth again shone as seven different players found the scoresheet.
Alberta travels to Manitoba next weekend for a two-game set against the Bison, while UBCO travels to Trinity Western to take on the Spartans on Thursday.
