EDMONTON - The Golden Bears 4x400m relay team of
Jaffar Phudjo,
Tyler Sharpe,
Clay Grattidge, and Ryder Ratee broke a 41-year old Golden Bears Open record with a time of 3:18.21 on Saturday afternoon in the UofA Butterdome, punctuating a successful weekend for the Bears and Pandas.Â
The Bears narrowly missed the top spot as a team, placing second behind Manitoba by just four points. The Pandas came in third, behind only Saskatchewan and Calgary, and well ahead of Lethbridge in fourth.Â
The 4x400m record was the second of the weekend for the host team, along with
Rachel Grenke's performance in the women's pole vault from Friday night.Â
The previous GBO record in the men's 4x400m of 3:18.50 was set by UBC back in 1984.Â
Along with his leg in the relay team, Grattidge also added a gold in the men's 600m with a time of 1:19.13, the second fastest time in UofA history. Wesley Eze captured his second gold medal of the weekend in the men's weight throw, adding to his gold in shot put from Friday.Â
The Pandas placed second in the 4x400m relay to cap off the event, along with a bronze in the 4x800m earlier in the day.Â
The Golden Bears and Pandas will next be in Winnipeg at the Jim Daly Bison Classic in two weeks.Â
