EDMONTON - The Bears and Pandas earned a total of 32 podium placements at the final home meet of 2025.Â
The Golden Bears captured 19 of those medals, highlighted by a Pandas Open record time of 1:28.88 in the 4x200m relay. The Bears also won gold in the 4x400m relay and weight throw (Wes Eze) on Saturday.Â
Leading all male university competitors in points, second-year Golden Bear Thomas Williams put on a show for the home crowd at Pandas Open.
In the final event before the Canada West Championship in Regina, Williams won the men's 3000m, adding a bronze medal in the 1500m race in the Butterdome. Williams led the Bears to a team title, finishing 95 points ahead of Saskatchewan.
Williams accounted for 16 of the Bears 181 points, winning the 3000m by a staggering 11 seconds, winning with a time of 8:35.92. He also placed third in the 1500m (and second among university athletes) with a time of 4:00.20.
Four of the top seven finishers in the 600m were Bears, led by Luka Michl in second, and Connor Bole in third.Â
Fifth-year Panda Grace Cook had another strong day, placing third in the 600m with a time of 1:32.49, the fifth fastest time in Pandas history.Â
Olivia Hopkins added a silver in the 1500m, with Nicole Nilsson winning the weight throw with a distance of 12.13m.Â
The 2025 Canada West Championship will run February 21-23 in Regina, followed by the U SPORTS Championship, March 6-8 in Windsor.Â
