Pandas top SMU, advance to U SPORTS Consolation Final

Hall, Tanner combine for 30 in 68-61 win

VANCOUVER - Annacy Palmer and Jayden Tanner combined for 30 points, leading the Alberta Pandas to a 68-61 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in the U SPORTS Consolation Semifinal.

The win sends Alberta to the U SPORTS Megabowl (Consolation Final) for the second-straight year, playing the winner of Laval vs Bishop's.

The Pandas made 10 3's in their win over SMU, which avenges their consolation final loss to the Huskies on their home court last March.

Reece Hall was named the Player of the Game, scoring 13, adding 12 rebounds and four blocks. Hall and fifth-year Claire Signatovich combined for eight of the Pandas 10 blocks in the win.

Alberta held SMU to just seven points in the final quarter, with the Huskies making just one field goal over the final 5:30.

Scoring six points in their quarter-final loss to Saskatchewan the night before, Alberta was much better early on Friday, scoring 27 in the first quarter. Palmer had eight over 15 in the first quarter, as the Pandas made 50% of their shots in the first.

SMU cut into the lead in both the second and third quarters, which even saw them take a 52-50 lead late in the third.

However a three from Tanner, one of her three in the game, restored the Pandas lead, one they would not relinquish.

Tied 57-57, Signatovich made a clutch and-one bucket, followed by blocks by both herself and Hall to secure the seven-point win.
