Pandas fall to host Warriors in U SPORTS Quarter-Final

Alberta to play St. FX in Consolation Semifinal on Saturday morning

ELMIRA, ON - Despite out-shooting the host and No. 8 seed Waterloo Warriors for the entirety of Thursday night's game, the No. 1 seed Alberta Pandas were shutout 3-0 in their U SPORTS Quarter-Final meeting.

Warriors goalie Kara Mark stopped all 22 Pandas shots she faced, including a game-high seven from CW Championship hero Abby Soyko. With the loss, the Pandas will play the #4 seed St. FX X-Women in the consolation semifinal on Saturday morning.

The Pandas arguably had more scoring chances, but could not beat Mark on Thursday. Waterloo scored a goal in each period, with a late third period goal being the dagger. Leah Herrfort, Kassidy McCarthy, and Gracey Smith scored for the hosts, who will now play the #5 seed Concordia Stingers in the semifinal on Saturday night.

Canada West goalie of the Year Grace Glover made 17 saves on 20 Waterloo shots in the loss for the Pandas.

Kallie Clouston and Natalie Kieser had early looks for Alberta in the first, but both of their shots from the slot were turned aside by Mark. Hemmed in their own zone for most of the first, Herrfort stole momentum back for Waterloo when her wrist shot from distance snuck under the glove of Glover.

The Pandas outshot the Warriors 9-6 in the second, but were unable to capitalize on their zone time and powerplay chances. Soyko had the best look in the second, but ringed a shot off the crossbar on a Pandas five-on-three powerplay.

McCarthy doubled the Warriors lead early in the second, beating Glover over the shoulder short-side.

Perhaps the best chance of the game for the Pandas came midway through the third when Soyko was sprung on a partial breakaway. However her low shot was turned aside by the left pad of Mark.

Smith's powerplay marker three minutes later ended the Pandas comeback hopes.

The Consolation Final is set for 10:00 a.m. ET on Saturday morning at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
