Ian Herbers was named Head Coach of Alberta Golden Bears Hockey for his first tenure on May 30, 2012. After a three-year tenure as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers, Herbers returned to the Golden Bears on July 1, 2018.
After a playing career that included four years with the Golden Bears (1989-1992), a Bachelor of Physical Education degree with distinction, a university national championship (1992), a Calder Cup championship (1993), a Turner Cup championship (International Hockey League) and over a decade of pro hockey, including NHL stops in Edmonton, Tampa Bay and with the New York Islanders, Herbers immediately moved into the coaching ranks.
He was an assistant in San Antonio (AHL) in 2004, and with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit in 2005. He got his first head coaching job with Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL in 2007, where he also served as general manager. He then joined the Milwaukee Admirals as an assistant in 2009, but was appointed head coach in 2011 amassing a 30-23-0 record. His all-time coaching record stands at 103-83-17 (.591).
Over four years with the Golden Bears, Herbers has won four Canada West Championships (2013, 2014, 2015, and 2019) as well as two U SPORTS Championships (2014 and 2015).
Herbers also served as a coach for Team Canada at the 2015 IIHF U18 World Championship, where they won a bronze medal.
