Terry Danyluk

After spending 26 seasons as the head coach of the Golden Bears Volleyball program, Terry Danyluk stepped into a managerial role in 2019, paving the way for Brock Davidiuk to take the reins.

Danyluk, both as a student-athlete and a coach, has one of the most distinguished careers of any Golden Bear or Panda. Prior to leading the GBV program as their head coach for nearly three decades, Danyluk was a tremendous athlete on the Bears Volleyball program from 1979-1981.

During his playing career, the Tofield, Alberta product received the Costa Chrysanthou Award as the Most Outstanding Contributor for two successive years, was a Canada West All-Star two successive years, was a member of the Canadian Junior National team in 1979 and 1980, was a member of the 1980-81 CIAU Championship Volleyball Team, and was selected to the 1980-81 CIAU All-Canadian Volleyball Team.

Danyluk was also a member of the Canadian Senior Men’s National team in 1978 and 1981-87, and represented Canada at several world championships, in three Universiade Games (including the silver-medal-winning team in 1983), and in the 1984 Summer Olympics (where Canada finished fourth). Danyluk was inducted into the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame in 1985.

Following a professional career that lasted into the early 90’s, Danyluk was named the head coach of the Golden Bears prior to the 1991-1992 season. Over the next 30 years, Danyluk turned the Bears into a national powerhouse.

From 1991-2019, the Bears missed the national championship only once, winning the national championship six times (1996-97, 2004-05, 2007-08,  2008-09, 2013-14, and 2014-15) under the guidance of Danyluk. He added another national title as an assistant coach in 2002 while completing his masters degree at the UofA.

Danyluk was a five-time U SPORTS and Canada West Coach of the Year (1997, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2009), and coached 11 Canada West titles (1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015), one as a player in 1981, one as an Assistant Coach in 2002.

He finished his coaching career with a 761-224 overall record, and a 416-92 Canada West record.

Danyluk recently added his 9th overall national title in 2022/23; his first as Manager of the Golden Bears, to go along with one national title as a player, one as an assistant coach, and six as the head coach.
