After being named the head coach of the Golden Bears and Pandas wrestling teams in 2009, Owen Dawkins has led the University to their best combined stretch of success in program history.
The Golden Bears and Pandas have combined to win nine Canada West Championships during his tenure, highlighted by the teams winning both the men and women’s titles in 2013, 2014, and 2018. Dawkins also helped guide the Pandas to their first-ever U SPORTS Championship in 2011 and the Bears third national title in 2013.
The Pandas have only finished outside the top three in Canada West once in nine years, while placing on the U SPORTS podium five times. The Bears placed fourth in their conference twice, but have won a conference medal for seven-straight seasons, and a U SPORTS bronze in each of the last two.
He wrestled as a Golden Bear in the 90 kg weight class, under former head coach Vang Ioannides, from 1999 until 2001, winning U SPORTS gold and a team bronze in 2001 and two Canada West gold medals. To cap off his final season as an athlete with the U of A, he was also honoured with the Beaumont Cup as the MVP of the Golden Bears wrestling program. Dawkins also won 15 senior and national age group medals as an athlete, and represented the U of A and Canada at the 2000 FISU World University Wrestling Championships in Tokyo, Japan, placing fourth.

Prior to re-joining the Golden Bears and Pandas, Dawkins coached with WP Wagner High School (2000 to 2003), McNally High School (2003-2005), and with the Lakehead University Thunderwolves (2005-2009).
