Pandas stay perfect with rout of MRU

Fehr powers Pandas with 17 points in 82-57 win

EDMONTON - In what can be defined as a battle of Alberta, the University of Alberta Pandas defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 82-57 in a Friday night clash at Saville Community Sports Centre.

With the win the Pandas remain perfect on the season and improve their win streak to three games to start the 2021/22 season, sitting atop of the Central division standings. Across the court the Cougars drop their first game of the season and bring their record to 2-1 to sit third in the division.

On a night that saw the Pandas drain 82 points, senior Brianna Fehr led the Pandas with 17 points, while second-year Claire Signatovich netted 15 points adding eight rebounds. Fellow senior Mackenzie Cooks also found her fair share of success with 11 points and seven rebounds for Alberta.

Second-year Cougar Jenika Matens rose to the occasion leading her team with a game-high 20 points and four rebounds in over 26 minutes played. Rookie Abbey Wilkinson joined Martens on the scoreboard with seven points.

It was all Pandas in the first quarter as they outscored the Cougars 24-13, going on a 15-4 run powered by Cook with seven points and Julia Strigl with five. However, it was Martens shot from beyond the three-point line at the buzzer that shifted some of the momentum for the visitors heading in the second.

The Cougars, with a new energy, started the second quarter with fire bringing the game within six points midway through the quarter. However, Fehr's ten points in the quarter made the difference for the Pandas down the stretch, increasing the gap to 15 points heading into halftime.

The break proved to be just right for the Pandas, blowing ahead of the cougars the third quarter was all Claire Signatovich who netted 11 points in the quarter and bringing the game to what seemed out of reach 70-44.

With a strong defensive push the Cougars held the Pandas to just eight points while finding their scoring touch with 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as the Pandas claimed the win.

The Pandas and Cougars will meet again tomorrow night in the rematch at 5:00 p.m with the Pandas looking for a weekend series sweep and the Cougars looking to go home with a win.
