ABBOTSFORD, BC -Â Justin Towill and Jessica NG took home the top individual prizes at the 2023 Canada West Golf Championships, as the UBC Thunderbirds took home both the men's and women's team victories in the two-day event hosted at the Ledgeview Golf Club.Â
It took three playoff holes, but a terrific second shot from Towill put the UBC Okanagan golfer within two feet to help clinch his second consecutive Canada West title over Zach Ryujin from the University of Victoria.Â
The UBC women's team ran away with a 39-stroke victory, taking the tournament for a fourth straight time.Â
UBC built a massive 26-stroke lead after the opening round and the five blue and gold golfers were a perfect 1-5 on the individual leader board.Â
The men's side got their redemption for a narrow second place finish last year, holding the slim lead they took on Monday to win the Championship by three strokes.
Veteran Bear Josh Guthrie led Alberta with a 21st place finish, finishing the conference championship with a 74-77 (+11).
Owen Lai (36th),
Sean Robertson (37th), and
Ryan Wittrock (40th) were among the counting scores for the Bears as a team.Â
First-year Panda
Kalee Seto led the Pandas with a solo 20th place finish, finishing the week with a 88-81 (+25). Sophomore
Jenna Sand placed 24th with a 96-84 (+36).Â
Due to an injury in their lineup, the Pandas had to withdraw from the team championship in Round 1.Â
