EDMONTON – Veterans
Claire Signatovich and
Jenna Harpe combined for 27 points on 12/22 shooting, leading the U SPORTS No. 5 Pandas to an 81-39 win over the UNBC Timberwolves, Friday night at Saville Centre.
Leading by just two after the first quarter, the Pandas outscored UNBC 64-24 over the next 30 minutes, finishing the game shooting 42% from the floor.
Signatovich finished with a game-high 14 points on 7/10 shooting, adding four rebounds and three assists. Harpe added 13, to go along with nine from each
Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma and
Brigitte Olson.
UNBC made just 26.4% of their shots, with only five Timberwolves making a basket. Trailing by 14 at the half, the Wolves scored just 17 points in the second half, including only six in the fourth quarter.
Svetlana Boykova scored 16 of the Wolves 39 points, adding 14 rebounds and four blocks. Rebecca Landry and Adaiah Tupas-Singh added eight points each. 11 of the 14 makes for UNBC came from inside the three-point line, as the visitors went just 3/18 from deep.
Alberta held a slim 17-15 lead after the first quarter, with the teams combining for 14 made shots and 13 turnovers in a sloppy 10 minutes. Eight of Signatovich's 14 points came in the opening quarter, as the Pandas erased an early 11-0 UNBC lead.
Alberta spread their wings from the second quarter on, slowly adding to their lead over the next half hour of basketball. The Pandas outscored UNBC 42-19 in the paint, with 31 of their points coming off Timberwolves turnovers.
Game 2 of the weekend set between Alberta and UNBC will tip-off tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. MT at Saville.
