EDMONTON – Third-year
Wanda Czebreszuk had two goals and an assist to help lead the Alberta Pandas to a 5-1 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
She was flanked by a great performance from teammate
Emily Duxbury who added a brace to the winning effort.
Alberta moves to 2-2-2 on the young season, good for 3rd in the Prairie Division, while the Pronghorns slip to 1-4-0 and sit in 5th.Â
It was a busy offensive day for the home side, who outshot Lethbridge 25-7 (13-4 on target). The Pronghorns keeper Bridie Harding made eight saves on the day, while her Alberta counterpart
Autumn Wynn made three.
It was an unthreatening start to the game as high winds challenged the ability to hit accurate long balls and forced a short possession-based attack for both sides. Harding was good early, parrying the first four balls that came on net within the first 30 minutes of play.
The Alberta momentum would eventually become fruitful when Duxbury would intercept a Pronghorns pass back to the keeper and make no mistake on a wide-open net for her second goal of the season. The 33
rd minute score would put the Pandas up 1-0.
The Pandas would not be done before the half, as
Adrienne Poulin would send a ball down the left wing for Czebreszuk who wonderfully dribbled to her right and hit a ball that beat the outstretched arms of Harding for her first of the season.
The visitors would respond immediately, with Tory Clements potting her second of the year on a breakaway and clever shot in the 44
th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. The hosts would end the half on a high note, however, as Duxbury would make a wonderful run and shot in stoppage time to score her second of the game and lead the Pandas into the half with a 3-1 lead.
The Pandas would maintain the momentum out of the half, with Czebreszuk hitting a 40-odd yard beautiful strike past Harding in the 60
th minute to give the home side a 4-1 lead. It was her second of the game, and with an earlier assist brought her overall point tally on the day to three.
The game would maintain that score almost to the end, when Poulin added a late tally in stoppage time to send the Pandas off with a 5-1 victory.
Alberta stays at home to take on Victoria next Saturday, while the Pronghorns host the Fraser Valley Cascades.
