EDMONTON - Firing a season-high 47 shots on net, the eighth-ranked Alberta Pandas utterly dominated the Regina Cougars in a 5-0 win on Friday night.Â
The 47 shots for the Pandas bests their previous high of 40 from last Friday's win over MacEwan. 19 of the Pandas shots came in the first period, which saw them take control of the game immediately.
Raegan Yewdall led the Alberta attack with a pair of goals and an assist, with the Pandas also adding goals from
Madison Willan, Abby Bourdeaud'Hui and
Hayleigh Craig. Makenzie Dojahn made 20 saves to earn her second consecutive shutout.Â
Facing a barrage of Pandas chances for the full 60 minutes, Regina starter Arden Kliewer was the lone bright spot for the visitors, making a career-high 42 saves. Frankly, Kliewer was the only reason the game was still within reach following the first 20 minutes.Â
The winners of three-straight, the Pandas now lead the East Division with a 8-3-0 record, while the loss drops the Cougars two points back of Alberta at 6-3-2.Â
Bourdeaud'Hui and Yewdall got the Pandas off to the races, scoring twice in the first three minutes to give Alberta an early 2-0 lead. Trailing 4-3 in shots early, the Pandas finished the period on a 16-0 run, with only the play of Kliewer keeping the score within two.Â
Regina would go nearly an entire period without a shot, finally registering one nine minutes into the second. At that point they were already down 3-0, thanks to a breakaway goal from Yewdall early in the second.Â
Dojahn, despite just 20 shots against, was terrific in rebound control in the win. Regina fired 16 shots towards the Alberta net in the second and third, but were unable to generate second chances.Â
With the game out of reach, Willan and Craig added insurance markers late in the third to seal the win.Â
The two sides will meet again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.Â
