EDMONTON - Second-year forward Frankroy Cain subbed on in the 58th minute and scored the winning goal, in addition to an assist, to rescue a win for the Alberta Golden Bears in a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
Cain scored his second of the year in the 88th minute with a beautiful header to leave almost no time for a Spartan comeback. He was joined on the scoresheet by Rodane Cato and Riland Idrizi, while the Spartans saw goals from Charles Tchouya Nana and Jordan Low.
Alberta maintains their lead on the Prairie Division with the win, moving to 5-1-1 on the year. Trinity Western sits in fifth place in the Pacific with a 1-4-1 record.
After a quiet start to the game the visiting Spartans were the first to get on the board in the 23rd minute, when a misplayed backpass to the Bears keeper was intercepted by Tchouya Nana who rounded Collens and put a calm finish in the back of the net for his second of the campaign. The home side was quick to respond, as just five minutes later a beautiful Normandeau cross went over an extended Alexander Cordeiro and found the boot of Idrizi who made no mistake from in close for his second goal of the campaign as well, which knotted the game at 1. Alberta had some real chances near the end of the half, but would enter the intermission with a 1-1 score.
After moving to a more aggressive press at the break, the Spartans again broke through on a beautiful chipped goal from Low in the 58th minute off a through ball from Kieran Eve. It was his third of the year which puts him in a tie for fourth place in the CW Golden Boot race. Trinity Western impressed for the majority of the second half, putting lots of pressure on an unusually porous Alberta defence that came into the match 4th in the CW in goals against per game. However, a chance cross from Frankroy Cain in the 78th minute found the head, then the boot of Cato who scored his first of the year to even the score at two with 10 minutes remaining. Then, with just two minutes remaining in regular time, Cain finished a headed pass from Caden Ruby that beat the keeper for the winning score, his second of the campaign.
Alberta faces the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack at home tomorrow, while the Spartans remain in town to play the MacEwan Griffins.
