EDMONTON - For the second-straight game, the Alberta Golden Bears stunned their opponent with two late goals to steal three points and a win. Yesterday it was
Frankroy Cain with the heroics. On Sunday,
Rilind Idrizi's goal in the dying seconds saw Alberta take a 2-1 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.Â
The Bears dominated every facet of Sunday afternoon's contest, controlling the ball, shot attempts and scoring chances. But it took 70 minutes for the homeside to finally break the WolfPack defence, with the winner coming just seconds before the final whistle.Â
Elijah Dos Santos opened the scoring for TRU in the 47th minute, which turned out to be the visitors only shot on target in the contest. Rookie
Caden Ruby tied the game with his second of the season in the 70th minute, with Idrizi capping off the comeback with his third of the year. Oliver Jumeau made four saves on six shots for Thompson Rivers, with Alberta outshooting TRU 18-4, and 6-1 on target.Â
The win pushes Alberta's record to 6-1-1 thanks to wins over Trinity Western and Thompson Rivers this weekend. The Bears lead Calgary by two games for top spot in the Prairie Division. TRU falls to 1-6-1, and remains in the basement of the Pacific.Â
Despite outshooting the visitors 8-2 in the opening half, Alberta struggled to garner any top-notch scoring opportunities in the first 45.
Prince Amanda had the best look, but missed an open net after Jumeau misplayed the initial ball and was caught out of his crease.
Dos Santos shocked the home crowd in the 47th, beating Bears defender
Joel Martins-Correia for a header off a TRU corner, beating Alberta keeper
Liam Collens for his first goal of 2024.Â
Trailing by a goal in the second half for the second-consecutive day, Alberta ramped up the offensive pressure.
Marcus Velado-Tsegaye and Idrizi both had open looks, but were unable to snag the equalizer. Alberta finally found the answer with Ruby, who subbed in at the 69 minute mark. A high school basketball star, Ruby raised over the TRU defence off a
Eric Normandeau corner, heading in the game-tying goal.Â
Alberta had chance after chance over the final 20 minutes, before Idrizi finally potted the winner. After
Dylan Marple sent the ball into the box, Velado-Tsegaye re-directed it over Jumeau and onto the waiting boot of Idrizi.Â
