EDMONTON - Fourth-year Panda
Morgan Harris scored a season-high 15 points to help lead Alberta to a 68-57 victory over the UBCO Heat Friday evening at the Saville Centre.
It was a true depth effort in this one, as she was joined by
Annacy Palmer (14 points),
Claire Signatovich (11 points), and
Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma (3-for-4 from three-point range) in what was the Pandas' seventh straight win. Alberta now sits at 9-2 and in second place in the Prairie Division.
UBCO was paced by leading scorer Lily Pink, who finished with a game-high 16 points, as the Heat dropped their fifth-straight contest, falling to a 3-8 record, good for fifth place in the Pacific.
While both teams had their chances the main difference in this one was the charity stripe, or rather the stark difference between the Pandas' 30 attempts and UBCO's nine. Alberta made a concerted effort to get to the paint early and often, and it paid off in spades as the Heat were unable to contain the multi-pronged attack.
The Heat started out true to their name, making their first three attempts from the field and forcing some Pandas turnovers to jump out to an early 8-2 lead. The Pandas responded by consistently finding the paint and drawing fouls, shooting 12-of-18 from the line in the first quarter, in comparison to UBCO's 4-of-5. Pink led all scorers with seven points, but the Pandas held a slight 22-21 advantage heading into the second.
Alberta built on their lead in the second quarter thanks to some phenomenal guard play from
Morgan Harris and
Jayden Tanner. They combined for 10 points in the quarter as the Pandas increased their lead to 38-30 at the half. Pink continued to lead all scorers at the break with nine, while three Pandas tied for the team lead at seven points apiece.
Pink continued to lead the Heat, who were more impressive on both ends of the floor in the third. However, the Pandas were able to go on a late run to take the quarter 15-14 and extend their lead to 53-44 before the final frame.
While the Heat fought hard all game, the Pandas were able to put the game away early in the fourth, opening up with a 9-0 run that they never looked back from. Harris scored four of those points and assisted on a couple more, as Alberta won this one 68-57.
The teams return to action tomorrow for their final matchup of the year.
