TORONTO - It's double gold for the Golden Bears and Pandas Tennis program, as the Bears captured their third national title in program history on Sunday afternoon.
Like the Pandas, the Golden Bears also defeated the Laval Rouge et Or 4-3 in the national final, winning their first University Championship since 2016.Â
Jared Maclean earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory to clinch the title, as he was also named the Championship MVP. Maclean also earned an 8-2 doubles win with partner Ryan Townsend earlier in the day, with the duo also earning an 8-4 doubles win in their semifinal win over the Western Mustangs.Â

With both the Golden Bears and Pandas winning their respective national championships, it marks the first time ever that one school has captured both the men and women's titles in the same year. Alberta also won the 2013/14 national championship when the men and women's events were combined.Â
Kiran Phaterpekar and Townsend also earned singles match wins on Sunday against Laval, after the Bears captured the doubles point. Townsend finished the weekend undefeated, going a perfect 4-0 at the Aviva Centre.Â
Alberta defeated Western 4-3 in the national semifinal on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 5-2 on Sunday to earn the team bronze.Â
