Swim program earns best finish at nationals since 2017

Bears and Pandas both finish top 10

POINTE-CLARE, QUE - The Toronto Varsity Blues women won a third straight national women's title and their 18th banner overall at the U SPORTS swim championships, while the Varsity Blues men captured the Nelson C. Hart Trophy for the 18th national title in team history.

The result halted UBC's six-year reign as national champs and gave Toronto a sweep of both team titles. It marked the Blues first U SPORTS swim banner since 2016 when they also swept the men's and women's crowns.

The UofA swim program his heading back to Edmonton with a pair of U SPORTS medals, with Bear Diego Paz adding a bronze in the men's 1500m freestyle on Saturday.

Paz also set a new program record in the men's 400m IM on Friday, breaking a 30-year old University of Alberta record. The Kamloops product led the Bears to a 7th place finish, their highest spot at nationals since 2017.

The Pandas placed 8th, their first time in the top 10 since 2019. It is also the first time since 2017 both Alberta teams finished in the top 10.

Third-year Panda Olivia Brendzan captured her third career U SPORTS medal in the 400m individual medley, racing to silver in Pointe-Clare, Quebec on Thursday.

Brendzan captured bronze in the event in 2022 and 2023, earning silver in 2024 with a time of 4:54.59.
