Bears and Pandas each place 5th at U SPORTS Championship

Garrett Brendzan captures third UofA medal on Saturday

Both the Golden Bears and Pandas placed 5th at the U SPORTS Championship in Toronto. 

Garrett Brendzan captured the lone medal for the UofA on Saturday, placing second in the men's 50m breaststroke with a time of 27.35, which ties the Golden Bears program record. 

Sophomore Panda Shayne Bowie just five one-thousands of a second off a podium spot in the women's 800m freestyle, finishing with a time of 9:03.27. McGill's Kealeigh McLeod finished third at 9:03.22. 

UofA head coach Paul Birmingham was also awarded the FOX40 U SPORTS Men's Coach of the Year Award. 

The UBC Thunderbirds swept the 2025 U SPORTS Swimming National Championships, claiming both the overall men's and women's team titles on Saturday night inside the Athletic Centre – Varsity Pool in Toronto.

Leading from the very first day of action on Thursday, the UBC men earned their 21st national championship banner with a final three-day point total of 1305.5. Collecting 19 total medals, including 10 golds, the overall victory marked a return to the top step for the Thunderbirds after just a one-year absence.

As for the UBC women, the overall victory is the 25th national championship banner in program history and first since 2020. The UBC women tallied 1472 total team points, accumulating 28 total medals, including 11 golds.
