McKenzie scores gold on Day 1 of U SPORTS Swimming

Brendzan adds silver in 400m Individual Medley

TORONTO - After capturing five medals and setting three team records at the Canada West Championship in November, fifth-year Paul McKenzie continued his stellar season, winning gold in the men's 200m freestyle at the 2025 U SPORTS Championship. 

McKenzie's time of 1:47.02 also sets a new Golden Bears team record, breaking his previous mark of 1:48.12 he set at the CW Championship in Vancouver. 

Panda Olivia Brendzan captured silver in the women's 400m Individual Medley, marking the fourth-straight season she has podiumed in that event. Her time of 4:43.53 also sets a new UofA record, besting her previous mark of 4:43.77. 

The UBC men sit atop the overall team standings with 411.5 points scored, including seven total medals. Ranking second in the men's team standings is the Toronto Varsity Blues with 348.5, and third is the Calgary Dinos with 290.

Meanwhile, the Thunderbird women hold a 247-point advantage as they tallied 565 points during the first day of competition, capturing 10 medals, including three golds. Currently in second-place Calgary has amassed 318 points, while the McGill Martlets rank third with 255 points.
